Currency

The currency is pound sterling (GBP), the denoting symbol is ‘£’ and £1 = 100p. Money is available in the forms of coins and bank notes; 1p and 2p coins are copper, whilst 5p, 10p, 20p, and 50p coins are silver. The £1 coin is gold and the £2 coin is gold and silver. Banks notes come in £5, £10, £20 and £50 denominations, although £50s can be difficult to change because of fakes in circulation. Currency is easily exchangeable throughout the UK. There are lots of bureau de changes, banks, post offices and travel agents offering this service. Banks are generally open Monday to Friday 9.30am-3.30pm. Tipping is common in restaurants and to taxi drivers, a tip of around 10% is typically expected. In pubs, if you just order drinks or pay for food at the bar, no tips are expected. Bargaining is rare.
