Parks & Green Spaces
Cambridge truly is a green city – the natural fen landscape flows right into the centre along the river Cam, cows grazing within sight of Kings College Chapel. You can picnic under the trees along The Backs and admire the stunning displays of flowering bulbs in Spring, or while away the hours in beautifully kept College grounds and Fellows gardens. The public parks and commons provide a paradise for children with play equipment, football pitches and tennis courts.
Cambridge University Botanic Garden
Opened to the public in 1846, the Cambridge University Botanic Garden develops & displays over 8,000 different plant species in 40 acres of beautiful landscapes. Take time to explore & enjoy the winter garden, glasshouses & mature trees. www.botanic.cam.ac.uk
Christ's Pieces
Covering 10 acres, Christ's Pieces is one of the most important formal parks in the city. Boasting a colourful array of flowers, including a rose garden in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales. A playground, tennis courts and a bowling green are here for those seeking recreational activity.
Emmanuel College Gardens
One of the largest, and most impressive of the Cambridge college gardens.
Jesus Green
This riverside park is the perfect venue to relax, picnic, walk, swim or play sport. It is easy to get to with only a short walk from the city centre. Throughout July and August jazz sessions and comedy slots take place from a marquee.
Parker's Piece
It was on Parker's Piece that basic football association rules were formed in the 19th century. An open sports ground, on which small local events are sometimes held.
The Backs
The 'Backs' of the riverside colleges provide stunning views throughout the year. The best way to see the Backs is by punting along the River Cam (a punt is a small flat-bottomed boat which is poled along). Chauffeured punts are available (Day Tours) if you don't fancy it yourself!
